Signing the Compact

In spring 2004, the founding members of the The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and more than 50 other organizations signed a letter asking over 250 cosmetics companies to sign a "Compact for the Global Production of Safe Health and Beauty Products." The Compact includes a pledge stating that all of the cosmetics and personal care products made by their company -- anywhere in the world -- will meet the standards and deadlines set by the European Union Directive 76/768/EEC and thus be free of chemicals that are known or strongly suspected of causing cancer, mutation or birth defects. In addition, the Compact asks companies to agree to implement "substitution plans" that replace hazardous materials with safer alternatives within three years.

We have made a commitment to meet or exceed all standards set by the European Union Directive. To date, the entire Avalon Organics bath and body line - in the green bottles - has been reformulated and is paraben free. We are in the process of reformulating our other product lines and the Avalon Organics Lavender Skin Care will be available paraben-free in late June. We expect to have paraben-free versions of Avalon Organics Vitamin C and CoQ10 Skin Care lines available by the end of 2005. Reformulation of Alba products will begin in early 2006..
