What does it mean that your products are certified to the NSF/ANSI 305 Standard?
The NSF/ANSI 305 Standard is the American National Standard for Personal Care Products Containing Organic Ingredients. This standard establishes the materials, processes, production criteria and conditions required for a personal care product to be labeled "made with organic". Under this standard, all products must contain a minimum of 70% organic content. The remaining 30% or less non-organic content has gone through rigorous evaluation by scientific panel and may not be available in organic form.

Are your products certified organic?
All of our products are certified to either the NSF/ANSI 305 Standard for Personal Care Products Containing Organic Ingredients or the USDA NOP Organic Standard. We believe in ethical and sustainable agriculture and business practices, including organic farming, and source certified organic ingredients whenever possible. All organic ingredients found in our products meet all federal requirements for organic ingredients in food products and are noted in our ingredient lists. These ingredients are certified by organizations including Quality Assurance International (QAI), Vermont Organic Farmers, Oregon Tilth and other respected third party organic certification agencies.

What is the difference between the NSF/ANSI 305 Standard and the USDA Organic Standard?
The USDA NOP Organic Standard is an organic food standard and was never intended for use on products other than food. Because the NSF/ANSI 305 Standard was established specifically for personal care products, it recognizes and evaluates the particular processes and ingredients that are critical to personal care product effectiveness.

What is your animal testing policy?
We share your concern that animals not be used to test cosmetics, toiletries and household products. We do not test our products or ingredients on animals, nor do we ask others to do so for us. Furthermore, we require that all our ingredient suppliers meet the same criteria of no animal testing. The Leaping Bunny logo found on our labels is an outward symbol of our commitment.

What does the Leaping Bunny logo on your packaging represent?
The Leaping Bunny logo is an internationally recognized symbol for cruelty-free cosmetics, personal care and household products. In 1996, eight national animal protection groups banded together to form The Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics (CCIC). This organization created and administers the Leaping Bunny Program, a cruelty-free standard for companies producing cosmetic, personal care, and household products. The Leaping Bunny Program provides the best assurance that no new animal testing is used in any phase of product development by the company, its laboratories, or suppliers.

Why isn't the Leaping Bunny logo on all your products?
Occasionally we are unable to include the Leaping Bunny logo on one of our product labels due to space restrictions. But rest assured, all of our products are cruelty-free and fall under the Leaping Bunny Program.

What makes your natural products different from other natural brands?
We are only experts on our own products, so it isn't fair for us to discuss other brands.

We can assure you that all of our products contain natural, organic, cruelty-free and 100% vegetarian ingredients. In addition, all of our products are now certified to the NSF/ANSI 305 Standard for Personal Care Products Containing Organic Ingredients or the USDA NOP Organic Standard. This means that all of our products are made with organic ingredients. In addition, they are manufactured using materials, processes, production criteria and conditions that have been approved by either NSF or the USDA. We passionately strive to deliver the finest possible formulations for the ultimate efficacy and benefits to your skin and hair.

Our products contain no meat or by-products of animal killing. We also exclude all cruelly obtained animal ingredients, even if the animal is not killed. We limit our use of animal products to ingredients that are deposited by and have no future benefit to the animal, such as beeswax.

Our products are formulated without: parabens, phthalates, synthetic fragrances, artificial colors, sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate, sodium methyl sulfate, propylene glycol, aluminum, mineral oil, petrolatum, oxybenzone, nano-particles, DEA, MEA or TEA, PEGs and PEG derivatives, ethoxylated ingredients associated with 1,4 dioxane, formaldehyde donors, or GMOs.

Why do your products cost more than conventional brands of non-natural products?
Our goal is to provide you with natural personal care products that are made with organic ingredients, are certified to the NSF/ANSI 305 standard and really work. To do this, it sometimes costs more to source high quality natural and organic ingredients that deliver great results. We hope that you will agree that the results are worth the cost. The actual retail prices of our products are determined by individual retailers.

Where can I find the Avalon Organics product I'm looking for?
Please use the store locator on our website to find the closest retailer to you for the product you are trying to find. Or you can always order product directly from our website.

How do I know if I am allergic to any of your products?
We recommend that you carefully review the ingredient list of any product you use to determine if it is acceptable to your needs.

Are your products safe to use during pregnancy?
We cannot make medical recommendations for our products. If you have concerns, we suggest that you speak with your health care provider.

Do Avalon Organics products with sunscreen provide Broad Spectrum protection?
Sunscreens are classified as over-the-counter drugs and are regulated by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA's new sunscreen labeling regulations go into effect June 2012. These new regulations will help consumers defend against both UVB rays (the rays that cause sunburn) and UVA rays (the rays associated with skin cancer and premature skin aging). To do so, the FDA redefined what Broad Spectrum means and recommends that consumers use no less than SPF 15.

According to the FDA, the definition of Broad Spectrum is that the level of UVA protection in a sunscreen is proportionate to the level of UVB protection. In addition, a sunscreen with less than SPF 15 cannot make a Broad Spectrum claim. Products must now be tested to prove the correct proportion of UVA to UVB defense prior to making a Broad Spectrum claim.

All Avalon Organics products that contain sunscreen provide Broad Spectrum protection. All labels for these items have been updated to reflect the new labeling language required by the FDA guidelines.

Are your products gluten free?
Our plant-based ingredients come from a variety of sources and we do not currently screen our products for traces of gluten. Therefore, we cannot guarantee that any of our products are gluten-free.

Where do you get your ingredients?
Although ingredients are predominantly sourced domestically, it is sometimes necessary to source globally. This is due to the fact that some ingredients are not available domestically or the domestic sources are limited based on market demand.

Where can I find Ingredients listed on your website?
Product details are included on each product page. Click on the product to review detailed ingredient information for each item. The ingredient list on the product you find on the shelf will always have the most current, accurate information about that item. For more information about specific ingredients, visit the glossary on our website.

What percentage of this product is from a specific ingredient?
Specific percentages are not available; however, we do list our ingredients in order of predominance by weight.

I experience a slight stinging when I use your product. Is this normal?
As with any product that is causing discomfort or irritation, stop using the product immediately. If the reaction gets worse, seek medical attention.

Is your packaging recyclable?
We share your concern for our natural resources and our environment. Using sensible and minimal packaging made with recycled and recyclable materials is very important to us. Many of our products are packaged in bottles made from 100% post-consumer resin. We regularly review our packaging and processes looking for opportunities to reduce our environmental footprint. For our plastic bottles, please refer to the recycle symbol and handle accordingly. Our cardboard packaging can be recycled along with other chipboard and cardboard materials.

What is the shelf life of your products?
Shelf life varies from product to product. We recommend you consult the Open Jar symbol on packaging to determine how long a product will maintain its freshness after it has been opened. An Open Jar symbol with "12M" indicates that a product will maintain its freshness for 12 months after it is opened assuming normal use.

While there may not be anything wrong or unsafe once a product has passed this time frame, we can no longer be certain our strict standards of quality are satisfied and request that you no longer use the product.
